11 Foods That Are Pretending To Be Healthy!
posted in Health & Fitness on 5/16/2014

1. Sushi: Japanese food is usually healthy, but when you Americanize it and start adding things like cream cheese and tons of avocado, that’s when you run into problems when trying to lose those few extra pounds. What’s your best bet? Skip the spicy mayo & cream cheese and aim for the tuna roll.

2. Granola: The cereal itself is actually fattening. That’s because granola cereals contain oils, including high in saturated fat coconut oil, sugar, nuts and other high calorie foods. One cup of granola can contain as much as 25 grams of sugar alone! Granola is not all bad, but limit your intake.

3. Frozen Diet Meals: Sure Lean Cuisine and Weight Watcher frozen entrees are fairly low in calories and convenient, but they’re also highly processed and high in sodium-not to mention the amount of preservatives in them!

4. Protein Bars: Also known as “glorified candy bars, protein bars are often high in calories, fat and do little to satisfy a person’s hunger. Some of them even contain triglycerides and are high in cholesterol!

5. Pretzels: They’re low in fat and low on nutrition. They’re basically empty calories! Though pretzels themselves are not unhealthy, they’re basically all sugar so they’ll make you hungrier and you’ll gain weight as a result of over-eating. They are usually also high in sodium!

6. Trail mix: Healthy trail mix is possible (with just nuts, dark chocolate, and dried apricots is one option), most of the versions we buy at the store are loaded with candy-coated pieces, yogurt-covered raisins and sesame sticks. If you eat 2 handfuls, it's almost 600 calories!

7. Trying to be “good,” so you have a bran muffin over a doughnut every morning? You should have just had the doughnut. Most commercially sold bran muffins contain about 800 calories of pure sugar and fat, well above the calorie count of many traditional cake doughnuts.

8. Prepared salads: Not all salads are healthy. Prepared tuna salads and chicken salads are often loaded with fats and calories due to their high mayonnaise content. While a lot depends on portion size and ingredients, an over-stuffed tuna sandwich can contain 700 calories and 40 grams of fat!

9. Olive oil: Extra light olive oil isn't "light" like the light we talk about when we're cutting back fats. Extra light refers to how processed the oil is, and extra light olive oil is one of the most refined olive oils you'll find -- olive oil is still oil and 1 tbs contains 120 calories.

10. Dried fruit: it is often high in sugar, especially the cranberries and cherries. When you eat 20 dried apple rings like they're chips, you'll probably still be hungry, and you've just eaten the equivalent of several apples. Instead, just eat fruit. It's cheaper than the dried stuff, anyway.

11. Vitamin water: A bottle of Vitamin Water is 2.5 servings, so nutritional label should be adjusted(unless you're going to drink less than half a bottle at a time). 1 bottle of Vitamin Water contain 125 calories and 33g of sugar. That's more than a 12 ounce serving of Coke (110 cal 30g of sugar)
