19 Potty Training Tips To Save Your Sanity! (And Your Carpet!)
posted in Health & Fitness on 7/3/2014

Have no fear! Potty training is just as scary for your little one as it is for you. Use these helpful tips to make it easier on both of you!

Use Cheetos in the toilet bowl to improve your little boys aim. Make it a fun game, with prizes if he keeps everything in the bowl!

Carry post-it's with you and place them over the sensor on public auto-flushing toilets to keep it from surprising your little one.

All kids love to unroll the paper. Stick with the end against the wall (underhand, not over) it will be much harder for them to unroll it then.

You can also use a "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" sign to make a visual aid.

If your little one does clog the toilet, don't fret. Drizzle some Dawn dish soap and then SLOWLY pour hot water from a bucket directly over the drain hole. The pressure of the water and the soap breaking down the paper should remove the clog.

Set up a progress chart! Set a pre-determined amount of successful potty times and give small rewards for reaching the goal. Candy at ten times, a book or toy at 15, etc...

Have your potty training kit prepared and in your bathroom ready to go! Books, stickers, a movie, games, coloring book, anything to keep your child occupied while they try to go.

A cheap and simple solution to night time accidents. Place a bed sheet on your child's bed, then a puppy pad, and then another sheet. This way, if they do wet the bed, there will be a dry sheet ready to go underneath the wet.

Set up a "Potty Timer" for your little one. Spend a day timing out every time they wet themselves (most children are every 30-40 mins). Then use that time block as your potty timer, taking your child to the bathroom every 30-40 minutes, regardless of if they have to go or not.

Don't be ashamed to resort to bribery. While your hold is on the toilet, give her small candies or toys or stickers but be careful! ONLY reward for DRY diapers upon entering the bathroom. A wet diaper does not equal a successful trip, even if they go again on the potty.

Let out your inner Bey and do a little song or dance! Sing "wipe, seat down, flush, wash your hands!" And do a potty dance with your child. Even children who can't speak well yet, will be able to tell you that they have to go through their potty dance.

Have your child help clean up all accidents. The tedious work of chores will be it's own incentive to go on the potty.

Save your back and let them use the tub faucet OR make a faucet extender by cutting up an old bath bubble bottle. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and place it over the faucet, turn on, and let the water run out of the top.

Panty liners make a great and cheap solution for little accidents.

Those store bought children undies can be expensive! So try this: place iron transfer paper into your printer, print out some of your child's favorite characters, then iron the images onto plain white undies.

Use disposable changing pads for long car rides to protect the car seat!

Most importantly... Do not stress. This is just as much a trying time for your little one as it is for you. Don't worry, your kid won't be going to college in diapers!
Another good tip is to always go to the potty when your child wakes up, after every meal, before bath time, and before bedtime. This routine will help your child in their training. Have a great day parents and don't forget to LIKE when SAVING! :)
