Bentonite is an absorbent aluminum phyllosilicate clay that consists mostly of montmorillonite and has a grey/cream color. It was given its name by Wilbur C. Knight in 1898 near Rock Rice, Wyoming where many volcanoes are present.

How to Make a Clay Mask

First and foremost, do not store or mix your clay with anything made of metal. When mixed with liquid, Bentonite Clay creates a mild electrical charge that will draw heavy metals. If you use a metal spoon or container, it will make the Bentonite Clay less effective.

Create a paste using Bentonite Clay and Water (liquid), apply it to your face with your fingers while avoiding the eye area, and let it dry for about 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Over Drying

Because Bentonite Clay absorbs moisture from the skin and has astringent properties, it can over-dry your skin, especially if you already have dry skin. In order to avoid over-drying, the use of coconut milk, extra virgin olive oil, or other carrier oils is acceptable.

Other Mixing Agents

Depending on your skin type, you can use liquids other than water with Bentonite Clay; for example: apple cider vinegar, coconut milk, extra virgin olive oil, sweet almond oil, etc.
