While doing research about kidney stones, how to avoid and pass these excruciating little buggers naturally, I found a remedy that never would have never occurred to me. Basil tea not only helps to break down stones, for easier passing but has the properties to stop them from forming.

Basil belongs to the family of Lamiaceae, in the genus: Ocimum. Its scientific name is "Ocimum basilicum."* Basil herb contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin A,cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

The term basil is derived from the Greek word "basilikos," which means royal. The herb came from India and Asia and spread through the Mediterranean. Basil is a member of the mint family.

Some sporadic research indicates that basil has a number of medicinal properties. It's so hard to find concrete studies not just for basil but any natural remedy. Not sure why natural instead of pharmaceutical has taken such a strong hold on society but I'm sure money is involved. In aromatherapy, basil is used to combat mental fatigue. The tea's scent may be part of its soothing effect.
I used basil leaves from my garden. Most common is the green leaf variety but I cultivated opal basil instead.
